Fault finding and troubleshooting in Woodside, NY
Half the house dark. A breaker that will not stay in. A smell you cannot place. Finding out why is the skilled part of this trade, and it is the part that “free estimate” quietly hides the cost of.
A fault is a puzzle with a physical answer somewhere in your building. The work is systematic: isolate, divide, test, narrow. Sometimes it takes twenty minutes and sometimes it takes three hours, and the honest way to sell that is by the hour, with the number said out loud beforehand.
We charge $165 for the first hour and half hours after that, and we tell you on the telephone before we set off. If the fix turns out to be inside that hour — and it often is — that is the whole bill. If you go ahead with larger work the same visit, the diagnostic hour comes off it.
The faults we are called out to most
A dead circuit with the breaker still in is usually a failed connection somewhere on the run — most often a backstabbed receptacle, which is the cheap push-in connection on the back of a device that was standard for decades and fails by loosening.
A breaker that trips instantly on reset is a short or a hard ground fault, and it is findable. One that trips after a while is an overload, and the answer is usually another circuit. One that trips only when it rains is water tracking somewhere, and there is a specific list of places to look.
Flickering that affects several rooms at once, or across two circuits, points at something shared — the service neutral, the main lugs, or the utility side. That last one we hand straight to Con Edison rather than charging you to look at it, because it is theirs.
The one that we treat as urgent
A burning smell, a scorch mark, a warm cover plate or a panel that has started to hum is a different category from an inconvenience. Those are told-you-today problems, and we will say so on the telephone and prioritise accordingly.
If you can smell burning and cannot find the source, the correct sequence is to leave the building and telephone the fire department. Not us. We would far rather turn up to a false alarm than be the reason somebody stayed in a house to wait for an electrician.
What happens after we find it
You get told what it is, what it will cost to put right, and whether it has to be done today. If the fix is inside the visit, we do it and that is the end of it. If it is bigger, you get a written quote and no pressure — a fault that has been there for two years can survive a week of you thinking about it, and we will tell you when that is not true.
No instructions here, and here is why. You will not find step-by-step instructions on this website for working on your own electrical system, and that is deliberate. The hazard in this trade is not that the work is difficult; it is that the circuit is still live, or that the thing you switched off is not the thing you are touching. Turning power off at a panel and proving it is off are two different acts, and the second one is what keeps people alive. We are glad to explain what we are doing, and why, while we do it.
Included as standard
What the job actually includes
A systematic diagnosis
Isolate, divide, test, narrow — not a parts-swap until something changes.
The number said out loud first
$165 for the first hour, half hours after that. Told to you on the telephone before we set off.
The fix, where it is inside the visit
Which it often is. You are not charged a second call-out to do what we just found.
An honest handover where it is not ours
A utility-side fault goes to Con Edison, at no charge from us.
A written quote for anything larger
With no pressure and no “today only” pricing, which does not exist here.
Credited against the work
If you go ahead with larger work the same visit, the diagnostic hour comes off it.
When to call us
Signs this is the job you need
- Part of the house is dead and the breaker has not tripped
- A breaker that trips immediately, or one that will not reset at all
- Flickering across more than one circuit or more than one room
- A warm cover plate, a scorch mark, or a burning or fishy smell
- A shock or a tingle from an appliance, a tap or a metal fitting
- Outlets that work intermittently, or only when something is jiggled
Fault finding and troubleshooting — what it costs
- First hour on site, including the diagnosis. Charged in half hours after that.$165
This is the range this job actually lands in, not a headline figure. The low end is a straightforward version of the work; the high end is one with a hard access problem, an old service, or something that has to be opened up before anybody can be certain. We tell you which one you have after we have looked, and the written quote says where the price could still move and why.
Questions we are actually asked
Troubleshooting — frequently asked
Why do you charge for diagnosis when others say it is free?
Because it is not free — it is the skilled hour of the job, and a “free estimate” means the cost of it is inside the price of whatever they then recommend. We would rather show you the number. If nothing needs doing, you pay for an hour and keep your money.
What if you cannot find it?
It happens, rarely — usually an intermittent fault that will not present while we are there. You pay for the time spent, we tell you exactly what we ruled out, and we agree what would make it findable, which is often being called the moment it next happens.
I can smell burning. What should I do?
If you can smell burning and cannot immediately identify a harmless source, leave the building and call the fire department. Do not go looking for it, and do not wait for an electrician. Once you are safe, call us.

Book a visit
Telephone the shop and you will get an electrician rather than a call centre. For defined work — a panel, a charger, a lighting scheme — the quote is free. For a fault, the visit is the diagnosis and it is $165 for the first hour, credited against the work if you go ahead the same visit. Either way we will tell you on the telephone which one it is.
