We are six people and we hire rarely, so this page is less a vacancy list than an honest description of what working here is like — including the parts that would put some people off.
The honest version
What the work is actually like
Most of it is old buildings. That means basements, crawl spaces, attics in August, plaster dust, and a great deal of time spent working out how to get a cable from one place to another through a structure that was built to prevent exactly that. If you like new construction where everything is open and the drawings are right, you will find this frustrating.
You will spend more time than you expect explaining things to people in their own homes, and you will be expected to be good at it. You will also be expected to tell a customer when they do not need the work, which is a genuinely uncomfortable thing to do the first few times.
There is no sales department to hide behind and no target to hit. Nobody here is measured on conversion, which cuts both ways: nobody will lean on you to upsell, and nobody will cover for work that was not done properly.
What we look for
Three things, in this order
Somebody who proves it dead
Every time, including on the small job at the end of a long day. This is the whole of the safety culture here and it is not negotiable for anybody at any level.
Somebody who will say “I do not know”
Out loud, in front of a customer, and then go and find out. Every serious mistake in this trade started with somebody who was not sure and did not say so.
Somebody who finishes things
Including the last ten per cent nobody will look at. If you are pleased by a run of clips being straight, you will fit in here.
Apprenticeships
We take one at a time
One apprentice at a time, taught by whoever is on the job rather than by a training officer, which means the teaching is real and it is also inconsistent. You will learn conduit from Tomás and lighting from Priya and they do not entirely agree with each other, which is the correct amount of disagreement.
You will be expected to ask why. Not as a courtesy — the questions genuinely improve how the rest of us explain things, and several of the plainer paragraphs on this website started as an answer to one.

If you are a journeyman or looking for an apprenticeship, write to us even when nothing is posted. We hire when the right person turns up rather than when a vacancy opens, which is a luxury of being this size.
