Every filing pulled, every job inspected 000-000-0000

Six people

The crew

There is no sales department here, so the person who quotes your job is one of the people below, and so is the person who does it. That is the main practical consequence of staying this size.

  • Two Master Electricians
  • Three journeymen, one apprentice
  • The same faces to the end
Daniel Okafor, Master Electrician · owner at Woodside Electric Services in Woodside, New York

Daniel Okafor

Master Electrician · owner

Daniel holds the licence this company files under. He came up through commercial service work in Manhattan, spent eleven years running other people's crews, and opened the shop on 61st Street in 2003 because he was tired of being told to leave a job before it was finished properly. He still does the load calculations himself, and he is the person who decides whether we recommend replacing a panel or tell you to leave it alone for another decade.

Marisol Reyes, Master Electrician · inspections and filings at Woodside Electric Services in Woodside, New York

Marisol Reyes

Master Electrician · inspections and filings

Marisol runs everything that reaches the Department of Buildings: the filings, the sign-offs, the coordination with the utility, and the inspections that close a job out. She also writes the inspection reports, which is why they say plainly what could not be reached rather than quietly leaving it out.

Kevin Brennan, Journeyman · service lead at Woodside Electric Services in Woodside, New York

Kevin Brennan

Journeyman · service lead

Kevin takes the service calls — the dead circuit, the breaker that will not stay in, the smell somebody cannot place. He has an unusual tolerance for spending two hours finding a fault that takes ten minutes to put right, and he will tell you when the honest answer is that nothing is wrong.

Priya Ramanathan, Journeyman · lighting and controls at Woodside Electric Services in Woodside, New York

Priya Ramanathan

Journeyman · lighting and controls

Priya lays out the lighting. She trained as a theatre electrician before she came to the trade, which is why her schemes tend to use fewer fittings than people expect and put them where nobody would have guessed. She does the retrofit arithmetic, and she is the one who will tell you a job does not pay back.

Tomás Delgado, Journeyman · commercial at Woodside Electric Services in Woodside, New York

Tomás Delgado

Journeyman · commercial

Tomás runs the commercial side: the shop fit-outs, the restaurant kitchens along Roosevelt Avenue, and the small buildings whose meter rooms have been added to for sixty years. He is very good at sequencing work so that a business does not have to close.

Grace Liu, Apprentice · scheduling at Woodside Electric Services in Woodside, New York

Grace Liu

Apprentice · scheduling

Grace is in the third year of an apprenticeship, and answers the telephone between site days — which means the person who books your appointment has usually been on a job like it. She is teaching the rest of us to label things properly.

Training

We take apprentices, which is slower

Grace is in the third year of an apprenticeship, and having an apprentice on a job means somebody is being taught while the work happens. That is genuinely slower than sending two journeymen, and we do it anyway, because this trade has an ageing workforce and complaining about it without training anybody is not a position.

It also has a side effect we did not anticipate: explaining a decision out loud to somebody who will ask why makes you better at explaining it to a customer. A fair amount of the plain language on this website started as an answer to one of Grace's questions.

An electrician teaching an apprentice to bend conduit at Woodside Electric Services in Woodside, New York

Somebody who does the work will come and look

Book a visit

Telephone the shop and you will get an electrician rather than a call centre. For defined work — a panel, a charger, a lighting scheme — the quote is free. For a fault, the visit is the diagnosis and it is $165 for the first hour, credited against the work if you go ahead the same visit. Either way we will tell you on the telephone which one it is.
