Standby generators and interlocks in Woodside, NY

There is a cheap answer and an expensive answer, and most people are only shown the expensive one. If you already own a portable generator, an interlock is a few hundred dollars and solves most of the problem.

  • Interlock from $780
  • Backfeeding made impossible
  • Filed and inspected

Backup power comes in two shapes. A portable generator, which you own, wheel out and start, feeding the house through a proper inlet and a transfer arrangement. Or a permanently installed standby set, which sits on a pad, tests itself weekly, and starts automatically when the supply fails.

The first costs hundreds to make safe and legal. The second costs thousands to tens of thousands. Which one is right depends entirely on how long your outages are, whether anybody is home to start a machine, and whether anything in the house genuinely cannot be without power.

Standby generators and interlocks in Woodside, New York

Backfeeding, and why we will not do it

The dangerous way to run a house on a generator is a cable with a plug on both ends, into a dryer outlet, with the main breaker switched off. It is called a suicide cord and the name is not decoration.

Two things go wrong. The cable has live exposed pins at one end whenever the generator is running. And if anybody forgets the main breaker — or if it does not fully isolate — your generator energises the utility's conductors outside your house, where a lineworker is expected to be able to treat them as dead. That is how people are killed by other people's generators.

An interlock is a small mechanical plate that makes it physically impossible for the main breaker and the generator breaker to be on at the same time. With a proper exterior inlet it is a complete, legal, safe solution, and it is the cheapest genuinely good thing in this whole category.

Standby sets: what they actually involve

A permanently installed set is a bigger project than the equipment price suggests. There is a concrete pad, a fuel supply — which usually means a gas fitter as well as us — a transfer switch, and the electrical work either side of it. There are clearance requirements from windows, doors and property lines, and in a dense neighbourhood like Woodside those clearances are frequently the constraint that decides where the set can go, or whether it can go anywhere at all.

There is also noise, and neighbours. A weekly self-test at eight in the morning is a real thing you are buying, and it is worth choosing the test time deliberately rather than leaving it at whatever it shipped as.

Sizing it honestly

You do not usually need to run the whole house. The useful question is what actually has to work: the refrigerator and freezer, heating controls and the boiler or furnace, some lighting, a sump pump if you have one, the internet, and somewhere to charge telephones. That is a modest load and it is comfortably within a portable set's capability.

Whole-house backup with air conditioning and an electric range is a much larger machine and a much larger bill. It is a legitimate thing to want. It is not the only option, and we will price the smaller version alongside it so you can see what the difference actually buys.

Filed with the Department of Buildings, or not done. In New York City, electrical work is filed with the Department of Buildings by a licensed Master or Special Electrician, and the finished work is signed off after an inspection. A homeowner cannot pull an electrical permit here, and neither can an unlicensed handyman. If somebody offers to do your panel or your rewire cheaper by leaving the filing out, what they are selling you is unpermitted work: it is illegal, your insurer can decline a fire claim over it, and it surfaces at the worst possible moment, which is the day you sell or refinance. We file for everything that requires filing. When a job genuinely does not require a permit we will tell you that too, and we will tell you why.

Included as standard

What the job actually includes

An honest recommendation first

Interlock or standby, based on your outages and your household rather than on which one is a bigger sale.

Mechanical interlock and exterior inlet

Backfeeding made physically impossible, not merely discouraged by a procedure.

Transfer switch where a standby set is fitted

Sized and configured to the circuits that actually matter.

Clearances checked before anything is ordered

Windows, doors and property lines. In Woodside this is often the deciding constraint.

Coordination with a gas fitter

Where a standby set needs a fuel supply. We arrange it and tell you what is ours and what is theirs.

Filed, inspected and commissioned

Including a test under real load rather than a start-up and a handshake.

When to call us

Signs this is the job you need

  • A portable generator in the garage and no safe way to connect it
  • A sump pump that must keep running through a storm
  • Medical equipment, a home business, or work that cannot stop
  • Repeated or long outages in your part of the neighbourhood
  • An existing generator connection you are not confident about
  • A freezer full of food and a habit of losing it

Standby generators and interlocks — what it costs

  • An interlock and inlet at the low end; a full standby installation at the high one.$780 – $16,000

This is the range this job actually lands in, not a headline figure. The low end is a straightforward version of the work; the high end is one with a hard access problem, an old service, or something that has to be opened up before anybody can be certain. We tell you which one you have after we have looked, and the written quote says where the price could still move and why.

Questions we are actually asked

Generators — frequently asked

Can I just plug my generator into a dryer outlet?

No. That arrangement has live exposed pins whenever the machine runs, and if the main breaker is not fully open it energises the utility's conductors outside your house, where somebody is working on them expecting them to be dead. An interlock and an inlet cost a few hundred dollars and remove both problems permanently.

How big a generator do I need?

Smaller than you think, if you are honest about what must run. Refrigeration, heating controls, a sump, some lighting and the internet is a modest load. Whole-house backup including air conditioning is a much bigger machine and a much bigger bill — we will price both.

Do standby generators need permits?

Yes, and typically more than one trade is involved because of the fuel supply. We handle the electrical filing and inspection and coordinate the rest, and we tell you plainly which parts of the project are not ours.

Somebody who does the work will come and look

Book a visit

Telephone the shop and you will get an electrician rather than a call centre. For defined work — a panel, a charger, a lighting scheme — the quote is free. For a fault, the visit is the diagnosis and it is $165 for the first hour, credited against the work if you go ahead the same visit. Either way we will tell you on the telephone which one it is.
