Aluminium branch-circuit repair in Woodside, NY
If your house was wired in the late 1960s or early 1970s it may have aluminium branch circuits. You will be told you need a rewire. In most cases the Consumer Product Safety Commission accepts a permanent repair instead, and it costs a fraction as much.
Between roughly 1965 and 1973, a copper shortage put solid aluminium conductor into the branch circuits of a great many American houses. The problem is not the metal in the middle of the run — it is what happens at the ends. Aluminium expands and contracts more than copper, creeps under a screw over decades, and oxidises into a poorly conducting layer. The connection loosens, resistance rises, and the termination gets hot inside a box.
That is a genuine, documented fire hazard, and it should be dealt with. What follows from it is the part this trade gets wrong.
The repair the CPSC actually recommends
The Consumer Product Safety Commission recognises complete replacement with copper, the COPALUM crimp system, and the AlumiConn connector as permanent repairs. The last two work the same way: every accessible aluminium termination is joined to a short copper pigtail with an approved connector, and the copper — not the aluminium — is what lands on the device.
COPALUM requires a specific tool and manufacturer training and is not always available. The CPSC identifies AlumiConn as an acceptable alternative permanent repair where it is not. Either way, the important word is *comprehensive*: this is a repair at every accessible connection in the house, not at the three outlets that were misbehaving.
What does not count as a repair
Ordinary twist-on wire connectors are not a fix, including the ones sold as suitable for aluminium — the CPSC has been explicit that these have not performed as a permanent repair. Neither is smearing anti-oxidant compound on and retightening, which buys time and nothing else. Neither is swapping the receptacles for ones rated to take aluminium directly, which is better than nothing but is not the recognised permanent repair.
If somebody offers you any of those as a solution, they are either uninformed or hoping you are.
When a rewire really is the answer
Sometimes it is. If the house needs rewiring anyway for other reasons — no grounding conductors, not enough circuits, a renovation opening the walls — then replacing the aluminium is a small increment on a job you are doing regardless, and it is the cleaner outcome.
It is also the answer where terminations have already overheated badly enough to damage the conductor itself, or where too much of the wiring is inaccessible for a comprehensive repair to mean anything. We will tell you which of these you are in, and we will price both so you can see the difference rather than take our word for it.
We do not sell panels on fear. An old panel is not automatically a dangerous panel. Two specific makes — Federal Pacific Stab-Lok and Zinsco — have a documented history of breakers that fail to trip on an overload, and we will recommend replacing those on the evidence. A sound forty-year-old panel from a maker with no such history is a different conversation, and so is aluminium branch wiring, which the Consumer Product Safety Commission says can be permanently repaired at the connections rather than torn out. Nobody here will tell you your house is about to burn down in order to sell you a panel. If we recommend a replacement we will give you the specific reason, show you the thing we are talking about, and put it in writing.

Do I have to rewire the whole house?
Usually not. The CPSC accepts comprehensive repair at the connections as a permanent fix, and for most Queens houses that is a fraction of the cost and the disruption of a rewire. We will price both and tell you which one your house actually needs.
Is aluminium wiring the same as an aluminium service cable?
No, and this causes a lot of unnecessary alarm. Large aluminium conductors in service entrances and feeders are entirely normal, current practice, and not what this page is about. The concern is solid aluminium in small branch circuits.
Will this satisfy my insurer?
Frequently yes — a comprehensive repair with an approved connector, documented, is what most underwriters are looking for. We cannot promise what a particular insurer will accept, and we will not pretend to. Ask them what they require before you commission the work, and we will write the report to match.
