This is the cheapest thing on this website and the one most likely to matter. The two questions that decide whether an alarm works are where it is and whether it is connected to the others — not what it cost.
An alarm on its own in a hallway will wake you if the fire is in the hallway. An interconnected system sounds every alarm in the building when any one of them detects something, which is what gets people out of a basement fire that started while they were asleep on the second floor. Where they go, and where they must not
Smoke alarms belong on every level including the basement, inside each bedroom, and in the hallway outside the bedrooms. On a ceiling they want to be away from the wall junction; on a wall they want to be near the ceiling but not right at it, because there is a pocket of still air in the corner where smoke arrives late.
They should not go within a few feet of a kitchen or a bathroom door, where cooking and steam will cause nuisance alarms — and a nuisance alarm is a genuine safety problem, because the next thing that happens is somebody takes the battery out. They should not go in the path of a supply register, next to a ceiling fan, or in the apex of a cathedral ceiling.
Carbon monoxide alarms go near sleeping areas and on every level, because carbon monoxide is what kills people in their sleep with no warning at all. If you have gas heat, gas cooking, a gas water heater or an attached garage, this is not optional.

Do alarms expire?
Yes. The sensing element degrades and most manufacturers specify replacement about ten years after manufacture, regardless of whether it still chirps when tested. There is a date on the back of the unit. It is the most commonly ignored number in home safety.
Why does mine go off when I cook?
It is almost certainly too close to the kitchen, or it is an ionisation type where a photoelectric one would suit the location better. Both are fixable, and they should be — the danger of a nuisance alarm is not the noise, it is that somebody eventually disables it.
Can you fit these on an existing circuit?
Usually yes, and that is what the price on this page assumes. Where a new circuit or a new run is needed to interconnect them properly, that gets quoted separately and we will tell you before starting rather than after.
